Furness Education Trust students meet Sir Kier Starmer
During British Science Week (7-16 March), students in Years 1-4 at Furness Education Trust primary schools were tasked with a special fairytale themed STEM challenge. The students had to build a house for the three little pigs, that could withstand a visit from the big bad wolf. Once their designs were completed, a hairdryer was used to simulate the huffing and puffing of the wolf, and to see whether their house designs would protect the three little pigs.
The winning teams from each class were then invited to attend a STEM day at BAE Systems’ newly opened facility, The Bridge.
They took part in a Roving Robots workshop, a prize giving presentation and explored a STEM fair too.
During their time at the Bridge, the students were visited by a very special guest, Sir Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister visited Barrow in Furness on 20th March and popped in to see what the children had been doing. He asked the students about their science studies and if they enjoyed the subject, asking the students also if they were excited to be out of school and missing lessons, but he was reassured that they would be catching up on the work they missed.
Heather Morgan, teacher at Victoria Academy and organiser of the STEM challenge said “it was wonderful to be visited by Sir Kier, it made our STEM day really special. The children loved speaking with him and I am proud that each of our students represented our schools so brilliantly. I would like to express my thanks to all the BAE Systems STEM Ambassadors for supporting our students in the STEM challenge. It was certainly a day to remember”.
Janine Pierce, Executive Headteacher and Primary Lead at Furness Education Trust, “The students had a great day visiting the Bridge yesterday, which was made even more special by the visit from Sir Kier. The students chatted away comfortably with the Prime Minister as he quizzed them about their STEM challenge and they proudly told him about their winning designs. We are incredibly grateful for BAE Systems for providing this opportunity for our students and for the support of the STEM Ambassadors”
